All Star Tryouts

Shaun has All Star Tryouts tonight for baseball.

If he makes it he gets practice with this "elite" team of all the best 7/8 year old players in our league for a month.

Then they compete in a tournament style week long series of games against the other Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken baseball leagues in Arizona for the title of State Champion.

He is at his personal peak right now in terms of excitement about baseball. He loves practice, games, going to the batting cages, playing catch with friends, with daddy, even with mommy. He loves playing baseball on Wii and on his DS games. He loves watching it on TV as well. Baseball, baseball, baseball.

I'm excited for him to try out tonight and I think if he is "on" he has a good shot at making the team - but the competition will be real for sure. Probably 30 kids for only 10 spots, and he is the youngest one out there most likely with only turning 7 in June.

I'm of the opinion that it is a good experience for him even if he *gasp* doesn't make it! ;-)

I know we now live in a world where everything has to be "fair", every kid gets a trophy, a participation award, every kid in the class has to get an invitiation, etc...
However, when I look around at alot of adults now-a-days, I am so frustrated by the sense of Entitlement they have. The idea that the world has something they owe them abounds - and their kids are even worse!

I think there is something to be said for a kid learning along the way that things will not ALWAYS go their way. And whether it was fair or not, the best thing they can do is regroup, figure out what to differently next time and fight for it when they get the next chance.
If it means that much to them - being turned away should FUEL their fire and make them better, stronger, and more confident.

So, as Shaun heads to tryouts tonight I'm excited for whatever way it goes, because I know he is strong enough to handle whatever challenge comes his way!

Of course - it sure would be fun if he makes it! ;-)

Preaching to the choir sister!! The entitlement factor in young adults today is sickening!! I think it is good to learn early that life isn't always fair and that you have to work hard for things you want. Best of luck to our favorite baseball player tonight! We'll be thinking of you!!
